Star Stories: Bringing people together through play

Board in the City CIC Southampton’s much-loved board game café, was awarded a Stars for Stars award from us recently for its outstanding contribution to mental health and wellbeing in our city.

It was nominated anonymously by someone who feels it deserves recognition for its work.

Located on Onslow Road, Board in the City is more than just a café – it’s a community hub where people of all ages and backgrounds can connect, relax, and rediscover the joy of play.

With more than 1,000 board games to choose from, friendly games masters to guide you and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s a space designed to combat isolation and promote positive mental health.

Why Board in the City has a star

Loneliness and social isolation are major challenges for mental health. Board in the City tackles these head-on by creating a safe, inclusive environment where everyone is welcome – whether you come alone or with friends.

The café doesn’t just offer games and great food; it actively supports the community through:
· Work experience opportunities for people with complex needs and mental health challenges, helping many transition into paid employment.
· Hosting community initiatives like Meals on Wheels for vulnerable residents, Pilates classes, and partnerships with local charities such as Beyond Reflections and People’s Pride.
· Collaborating with mental health services and local organisations, including CAMHS and Solent NHS, to make wellbeing support accessible.

As one supporter put it:

“Board in the City is a lifeline for so many. It’s a place to feel safe, meet people, and rebuild confidence.”

Promoting positive mental health

Spaces like Board in the City are vital for creating a mental health friendly Southampton.

They provide what experts call a ‘third place’ – a welcoming environment outside home and work where people can connect, share, and belong.

By encouraging social interaction, creativity and fun, Board in the City helps reduce stress, improve mood and build resilience – key factors in maintaining good mental health.
