Star Stories: Betty, Tess and Michelle
From April 2026, we’ve made a small update to our Stars for Stars nomination guidelines. We ask that individuals don’t nominate themselves, or the organisation or place where they work. Nominators may remain anonymous, but we do request contact details so nominations can be verified if needed. We warmly encourage service users, friends, family members, supporters and community members to submit nominations — your voices are what make this people‑powered and meaningful.
Star Stories: Betty, Tess and Michelle
As part of our winter batch of Stars for Stars awards, a trio of individuals were anonymously nominated for the meaningful and compassionate ways in which they support others.
These three remarkable community members, whose actions have had a profound impact on those around them, are Betty Hamer, Tess Ward and Michelle Wheeler.
Though each was nominated separately, their stories collectively highlight the everyday kindness, empathy and dedication that strengthen the wellbeing of people across our city.
Betty Hamer
An anonymous nominator praised Betty for her unwavering commitment to learning about mental health and sharing that knowledge with others. Through her involvement in Keeping Well Creatively and her leadership at the Creative Minds event, Betty demonstrated a consistent dedication to wellbeing, creativity and community support. According to the nomination, she applies the skills she has gained “in every conversation…everything she does,” and as a result, “she really shines bright.”.
Tess Ward
Tess was recognised for the comfort, understanding and reliability she offers. Her nominator explained how she has helped them through difficult times, not only within the context of a project they were part of, but whenever support was needed. Tess was described as someone who “always listens without judgment and is great fun to be around,” showing how deeply her presence and kindness are valued.
Michelle Wheeler
Our third individual nominee, Michelle (pictured left with Saire who had the initial idea for Stars for Stars), a social prescriber at Walnut Tree Surgery, was commended for the powerful role she played during an “incredibly difficult time” in someone’s life. The nominator highlighted the moral, psychological, emotional and practical support she provided, support that made a significant difference at a critical moment. This recognition reflects Michelle’s ability to offer not only professional guidance but genuine human care when it matters most.
Consistent acts of kindness
These nominations remind us that community wellbeing is often strengthened not by grand gestures, but by small, consistent acts of kindness.
Betty, Tess and Michelle each embody the spirit of Stars for Stars. They are people who listen, uplift and show unwavering compassion. Their contributions may have been offered quietly, but their impact is lasting and deeply appreciated.
